This layer depicts the stream order across Maryland, derived from the Bare Earth Digital Elevation Model (DEM) at at a 10 meter resolution using hydrological modeling techniques. The process involves filling sinks in the DEM to ensure continuous water flow, calculating flow direction to map how water moves downhill, and generating a flow accumulation raster to identify where water collects. Stream order was then assigned using a ranking system that classifies streams based on their size and connections, with smaller tributaries ranked lower and larger rivers ranked higher.
This dataset provides insight into Maryland’s hydrological networks and assessments of water flow, drainage patterns, and potential agricultural impacts.
